Learning to Fly Fish

by Ken Trosper

Participant learning to cast in Blue Sky Hall, Ethete.

In early June, Wind River Alliance partnered with local businessman Mark Lambert of L&M Custom Rod to conduct an introduction to fly fishing. Mark is a world- renowned custom rod maker, who hand produces everything from small ice fishing rods to deep sea rods.

The goal was to introduce local reservation people to fly fishing and the art of casting. The success of Markís methods of teaching the basic fly casts was soon evident as people who had never before used a fly pole were soon making smooth thirty foot casts. In fact, the class was such a success that the participants requested a follow-up class to refresh their skills and learn advanced casting.

The Wind River Alliance, together with L&B rods, gave a custom fly rod as a door prize. The lucky winner was Robbie Valdez of Ethete. The Tribal Employment Rights Office has already purchased another rod as a prize for participants in the next class. Mark will allow the winner to pick his or her own rod, and personalize it before he finishes constructing it. Rocky Mountain Discount sports also donated a reel and line to the class for the winnerís rod.
